This is why there is so much competition in the natural listings within the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Most internet users choose business that are listed page 1 of the search results, that means your online home business needs to be there among them. Many successful internet marketers use Search Engine Optimization, SEO, to improve their search engine rankings, leading to more traffic and more sales.

1. Choosing Relevant Keywords



Keywords are words (or phrases of words) that people type into the search box when searching for something they are interested in. Choosing the right keywords may determine the success or failure of your business. Some tips for you when researching your keywords are:

  • Choose keywords that are relevant to your website - Google is big on relevancy

  • Choose keywords that people are actually searching for - why optimise your website for keywords people rarely search on

  • Choose keywords that are not too highly competitive and return millions of results - chances of you getting to the top is close to nothing!

They not only have a keyword research tool, but hundreds of other tools, and resources for you to use at your disposal.



2. Content

No matter how pretty or beautiful your website is, the search engines don't really care - they are only looking for valuable content. Search Engines "crawl" your website with what they call spiders. These spiders scan your entire website, including the links that you have on your page to determine if you meet the minimum content requirement to be listed in their directory. You must therefore optimise your website by writing a few paragraphs on your home page (or subpage) using the chosen keywords.



3. Keyword Density

Keyword density is the percentage of times a keyword or phrase appears on a web page in comparison to the total number of words on the page. Make sure your keywords appear multiple time s on your webpage. We suggest anywhere between 3-5% as this is enough to get the search engines spiders interested in your website. Any more than this is spamming, any less is not enough.



4. Incoming Links

Once your page is optimised you need to create and build as many high quality links to link back to your website. These links should be one way if possible and from relevant websites. A good way to do this is through industry partners, forums, article marketing websites.

When your website is new it could take months before the search engines will find you and "crawl" your site. For this reason SEO is a technique you should try to learn, even though it is a more difficult technique and is more time consuming.
