Getting A Domain Name For
Your Website
On the Internet your domain name is your business name and is defined as your unique internet address. Your domain name represents your business and provides the user with an idea of what your business is about and what to expect and look for on your website. Otherwise, prosepective visitors have no other way of knowing what your website is about. For this reason, your domain name is one of the most important factors in determining your success on the Internet and special care must be taken in creating one. There are 2 steps to getting a domain for your business.
Step 1 : Choosing a Domain Name
Some tips when creating a domain name:
keep it short and simple
should be easy to spell
should be easy to remember
should be related to you business
try not to use the number "0" unless it is going to be part of a recognisable word eg 1001. This is to avoid any confusion between number "0" and letter""O"
try to avoid replacing words with numbers eg business4you.com instead of businessforyou.com as this can confuse many people
More than 100 million domain names have been registered worldwide and thousands of new ones are created every day so it comes without saying that a lot of the good names have been taken and it would be hard to find the domain name you want. So you must let the creativity side of you kick in to think of something unique. The following tips may help you:
1. KEYWORDS
Brainstorm and research keywords that are relevant to your business. Keywords are words people type into search engines when they are looking for information.
List as many words as you can think of that are related to your preferred domain name or content of your website.
Make different combinations of these keywords and check if these domain names are available
You can also try using Nameboy.com to help you with ideas. Type in these keywords and see what is available
You may want to consider hyphenating you domain name. There are both advantages and disadvantages of doing this:
advantages:
the non-hyphenateed form is already taken, by hyphenating it you still get the domain name you want
search engines can distinguish your keywords better resulting in better search results through them
disadvantages:
easy to forget the hyphens when typing in the domain name
harder to communicate the domain name in verbal converssations, leading to potential errors in the spelling. For example when you tell a friend your domain it is harder to say "work hyphen at hyphen home dot com" than work at home dot com"
If you do choose to use a hyphen, do not use more than one as this can make the domain name appear messy and harder to remember.
2. EXPIRED DOMAINS
You can look at buying an expired domain name at DeletedDomains.com. The advantage of this is that the website owners have already invested time, effort and money to
promote their site and build up traffic. Many of them then lose interest
and move on, leaving their site to run by itself. Eventually their domain names will expire and this is when you can buy it. This gives you a pre-built stream of customers. You can either
rebuild the site, or redirect the traffic to your domain.
3. USE DIFFERENT EXTENSION
Consider a domain name with a different extension (instead of .com). There are many extensions available : .net, .info, .org, .us, .ws ...etc.
Step 2 : Registering a Domain Name

After choosing a domain name you must register it with a domain registrar.
